A List of Chronically Ill Characters
In the Harvest Moon video game series:
Lillia [(More) Friends of Mineral Town]
Chronically ill since childhood (another character mentions that a doctor told Lillia she wouldn’t be able to run when they were children). Lillia spends most of her time in her house and goes to the clinic each week. Possibly has a terminal illness, her husband left the village to find a cure but it’s unclear whether this was out of wishful desperation or if there’s actually a cure. Mother of two marriage candidates.
Dia [Magical Melody]
Chronically ill, moved to the village to recover (possibly from a surgery? she may have mentioned this at some point) and brought her nurse, Gina, with her. Lives at in-game Sanatorium and it’s implied that she takes medicine daily (as she’ll leave if you stop shipping herbs used for medicine.) Unable to leave the house often, occasionally seen going on walks. In-game marriage candidate.
Gray [Harvest Moon 64]
Chronic pain and disability; another character mentioned that he used to be a horse jockey and was injured badly falling off a horse and now is unable to ride (and Gray occasionally says things to the main character along the lines of “it must be nice to be so strong” - implying ongoing disability.) Rival for an in-game marriage candidate.
Marlin [Harvest Moon DS/Cute]
Chronically ill, possibly genetic (mentions family also being ‘not so strong’ and how his health must be inherited, etc). He mentions that he used to be very sick and is still ill, having particular trouble on rainy days. He also drinks in-game ‘energy drinks,’ and often has to watch how much he strains his body. He talks about the frustration of chronic illness. In-game marriage candidate.
Celia [Harvest Moon DS/Cute]
Chronically ill, moved to village from the city for her health, goes to the clinic for check-ups. Talks about being sick when she was a child and being unable to go out and play with other children, says that she got better as she grew older but still has many days where she feels unwell. She often goes to the in-game Goddess Pond to make wishes to the Goddess to keep her health/heal faster. In-game marriage candidate.Finding chronically ill characters, particularly ones that are seen as a integral part of society (and included as parents and romantic interests) in games is always a nice treat to me, so, decided to write up a short list of the ones I could recall off the top of my head for you all!
Reblogging since I’m leaning toward another Harvest Moon gaming marathon asap (:
